“Seed to table”: Organic Farming by Oxfordians

“Seed to table”

Grade 1 students of Oxford School, Trivandrum participated in organic farming with the concept of ‘seed to table’ by asking them how food gets to their tables. They were encouraged to think about the starting when the seed is planted in the soil and its different stages of growth and harvesting of the plant, until the fruit or vegetable is eaten from a plate. This included sowing seeds in rich soil, preparing food for the table, and all the steps in between, and represents a combination of natural processes and human activities. It was a great experience for the children which helped them to understand the importance of food and the pain behind the food-making process. A deep understanding of food production from seed to table helps children understand where their food comes from. It can also engender an appreciation for nature and for nutritious, fresh food.
